Welcome to

Navy Days 1939-1945

This site is dedicated to my father, Donald James Chalmers.

In July 2003, he wrote the note below to his children, Don Jr, Larry, Anne and Paul. I have collected letters, stories and pictures found in Dad’s archives. They are presented here to bring dad’s wish that we know his history to fruition.

Troops (Don addressing his four children),

Just a word of clarification of why I am writing military histories/memories. My father and mother were both in WWI, and I knew practically nothing about my mother’s experience as an army nurse in France, and even less about my father’s time in WWI as part of the Canadian army.

I have felt a real loss by this and vowed for some time to correct it for our kids. With some light prodding from Paul(son), you are receiving the results whether you want it or not. As the mood inspires me, I’ll add a few attachments.

Best to you,

Don
